Bussi, l'eredità della Montedison: il veleno delle discariche nel fiume Tirino

The chemical industry established itself in Bussi sul Tirino, in the province of Pescara, in the early 1900s. First Montecatini, then Montedison, processed chemical compounds for nearly 100 years. Until 1971, production waste was dumped directly into the Tirino River, polluting its bed and the underlying aquifer. From 1971 onward, harmful toxic waste ended up in three landfills surrounding the industrial plant. This terrible environmental disaster contaminated the aquifers of the entire Pescara Valley, from the mountain villages to the capital of Abruzzo. In 2007, a parliamentary question denounced the levels of pollution in tap water, but local authorities filed suit against those who disseminated the test results for causing alarm. The poisoned wells were only closed in 2008. It is estimated that approximately 700,000 people were poisoned by water contaminated by Montedison's poisons. Legal proceedings have been launched against the executives of that company and Solvay, which purchased the plant in 2001. The cleanup of the entire area, loudly demanded by residents and committees, risks being a pipe dream. http://youmedia.fanpage.it/video/aa/U...
