What Happened to the Nazis after 1945? | World War II Documentary
In April and May 1945, the collapse of the Third Reich culminated with the fall of Berlin and the suicide of Adolf Hitler in the Führerbunker, followed by Germany’s unconditional surrender on May 8. With the capital occupied and the Nazi apparatus disintegrated, a decisive phase began: the capture of high-ranking officials, the identification of those responsible, and the division of Germany into Allied occupation zones. While some leaders committed suicide or were arrested in the first days, others attempted to flee under false identities amid the chaos of millions of displaced people. Justice took shape in the Nuremberg Trials, where figures such as Hermann Göring, Joachim von Ribbentrop, and high-ranking military commanders were prosecuted for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and conspiracy to wage a war of aggression. At the same time, denazification began: the dissolution of the Nazi Party, mass interrogations, classification of responsibilities, and removal from public office. However, the magnitude of the regime meant that many mid- and lower-level members were reintegrated over time, especially in the context of reconstruction and the beginning of the Cold War. While some individuals responsible for the Holocaust were captured and tried decades later, others managed to escape through clandestine routes to South America or other destinations. Former SS members, Wehrmacht officers, and civilian officials faced unequal fates: prolonged captivity, judicial proceedings, social reintegration, or life in anonymity. The “after” of Nazism was not an immediate closure, but a prolonged process of justice, memory, silence, and reconstruction that deeply shaped the history of Germany and Europe in the second half of the 20 century.
