Ancient DNA Proves the Sea Peoples Came From Somewhere Nobody Expected. For nearly two centuries, historians have argued over who the Sea Peoples really were. Around 1177 BC, the eastern Mediterranean world collapsed. The Hittite Empire fell. Mycenaean palaces burned. Ugarit was destroyed. Trade routes broke apart. Egypt survived — but only after Ramesses III recorded his battle against mysterious groups known as the Sea Peoples on the walls of Medinet Habu. But one name among those Sea Peoples refused to disappear: the Peleset. They are better known today as the Philistines. For generations, scholars debated whether the Philistines were foreign migrants who crossed the Mediterranean, or local Canaanites who adopted a new culture. Then ancient DNA from Ashkelon, one of the great Philistine cities, revealed something unexpected. The people of Ashkelon were mostly local Levantine — but around the beginning of the Iron Age, a new European-related ancestry appeared in the population. Then, within only a few centuries, that genetic signal faded as the newcomers mixed with the local people.
