Masisi Links Diamond Stance to Election Loss
MASISI ON DIAMONDS, POWER AND DEFEAT: “I WENT FOR THE JUGULAR” Former Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi delivered a candid reflection on leadership, diamonds, and political consequences during a public lecture at the University of Namibia. Masisi revealed that his administration took an aggressive stance during diamond negotiations, pushing to secure a greater national benefit and eliminate what he described as exploitative clauses in past agreements. He highlighted Botswana’s 15% shareholding in Debswana as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s control and returns from its most valuable natural resource. He described the negotiations as a deliberate effort to confront powerful interests, stating he “went for the jugular” to defend Botswana’s economic sovereignty. However, Masisi also acknowledged the political risks of such bold decisions, linking his firm position to his defeat in the 2024 general election. Despite the loss, he expressed no regret, saying leadership sometimes requires taking difficult positions that may carry personal or political consequences, but ultimately serve the long-term interests of the nation.
