Panaji, capital of the Indian state of Goa, offers lots of colonial Portuguese charm. ▶︎ Watch more videos from India:    • SOUTHERN INDIA (2025)   Like other parts of India, the state of Goa bears distinctive traits based on its colonial past—and in Goa’s case the flavor is Portuguese. I’ve come to Panaji, Goa’s capital at the mouth of the Mandovi River where the bright colors and architecture suggestive of Europe’s Iberian Peninsula are on vivid display. This is the heart of the former “Portuguese India,” where the first Europeans set up shop in the early 1500’s to exploit the spice trade and, amazingly, didn’t leave until 1961—14 years after India claimed its independence.
