Arizona Released 2 Lone Wolves Into a Dead Mountain Range — What They Built Was Impossible For nearly a century, the mountains of southeastern Arizona stood silent. The Mexican gray wolf, El Lobo, had been hunted, poisoned, and erased from the landscape by federal extermination programs. By the 1930s, the wolf was functionally extinct in the United States. Then, in the spring of 2024, two wolves nobody expected — a female nicknamed Llave, the Spanish word for key, and a male nicknamed Wonder — were released into the Peloncillo Mountains of Cochise County, Arizona. What they built there in just twelve months would become the first known Mexican gray wolf litter in that part of Arizona in many decades. But what happened to that family next would expose everything still broken about wolf recovery in the American Southwest.
