Passo San Boldo, Road SP635, Treviso, Venetia, Italy - by motorcycle and drone

Until early 1918, the Passo San Boldo could only be crossed via a steep mule track. Then, in a record time of just a few months, a road suitable for military vehicles was blasted into the rock face at the end of the valley coming from the south. The pioneers of the Austro-Hungarian army used prisoners of war and even forced children and women from the local population to work on the construction. Today, the road between the village of Tóvena in Val Mareno in the south and the villages of Sant'Antonio Tortal/Trichiana in Val Belluna in the north is a tourist attraction and also a challenge for every cyclist, because despite its adverse wartime origins, the steep section in the rock face is a technical masterpiece. The pass crossing on the SP635 from Tóvena to Sant'Antonio Tortal is about 11 km long. The steep section at the end of the valley is regulated by traffic lights and is only passable in one lane. The road is easy to drive on; the five hairpin tunnels in the steep section are well lit but quite narrow. There is no toll for using the road.
