DIY Roof Tent - 1st Night Field-Test on Suzuki Jimny
I set out to build my own roof tent, learning how to use a sewing machine, choose lightweight materials, and design custom hinges. After three versions (which took a long time!), I almost hit my 35-40kg target. The final weight was 42kg without mattress and accessories. I know how to hit 37kg, but a 4th version isn’t feasible cost-wise and I honestly would dread making another one. It’s low-profile (100mm) and fits my 6' frame comfortably, with room inside for an inflatable mattress. It lacks luxuries and doesn’t match pro tents, but I’m happy with it—it looks great on the Jimny. I’ll share a detailed video soon. DIY KITCHEN A fun project was the slimline slide-out kitchen (80mm high, 1320mm long), holding up to 200kg. I chose this over a tailgate table because: 1. More worktop space 2. No issue with the Jimny door slope 3. I can access tailgate Molle pouches It includes a slim sink with Dometic battery faucet, and a 21L drawer fridge, small but sufficient, powered by a Bluetti EB55. I chose a modular design so I can leave the sink/stove behind when not needed. The setup is compact, leaving room to sleep inside in bad weather. DIY TENT UPDATE (2025) After all the effort, I dismantled the tent and sold parts to help fund an iKamper Mini. Why? 1. My low-weight obsession led to too many compromises. The wedge style didn’t suit my height (183cm), lacked space and wasn’t practical. That style of tent in my opinion is the worst for liveable space. I incorrectly assumed it would be okay but it felt very claustrophobic after the initial excitement wore off. 2. Condensation and water ingress. The aluminium roof caused issues, the tent fabric didn’t hold up and weren't mouldy, and the vinyl windows fogged up and went weird looking. Despite this, I see it as a win. I learned so much about design, materials, and what I enjoy building. The iKamper Mini is brilliant, my wife and I have had many comfy nights in it. Let’s see if it’s the long-term tent for us! THANK YOU Thanks for watching my videos and hope you stick around for more! Big thanks to Bluetti for supporting my power needs. Thanks again to Bluetti for the EB55 power station and solar panel.
