Wonder of Sri Lanka – 43…… Basawakkulama Tank – Anuradhapura Today we take you to the Sacred City of Anuradhapura. The lake that is recorded as the first lake in our country, which is known by the names of Abhaya Vapi, Abhaya Wewa and Basawakkulama. According to historical information, this lake was built by King Pandukabhaya. The name he gave to this lake is Abhaya Vapi. There are different opinions about the name Abhaya here. One of that the king used a part of his name Abhaya, for this lake. When Princess Bhaddakachchana, who was the queen of King Paduvasdev, came to Sri Lanka, one of her brothers who came with her, named Anuradha, built the city of Anuradhapura. It is also said that he made this lake. Later, daughter of King Paduvasdev , Chitra gave birth to child, who became the king of Anuradhapura by the name of King Pandukabhaya. It is said that he renovated the tank built by his grandfather Anuradha and built it bigger and named it Abhaya Vapi in memory of his one of uncle Abhaya. There is a special place for those who come to the sacred city of Anuradhapura to take a bath safely in the lake at the Thuparama Mawatha area. Also, if you want to see the most beautiful view of the lake, you have to go to Basawakkulama view point. Go down the Thuparama Road and after a short distance, turn left to Basavakkulama Road. On that road, steps have been prepared to climb up to the top of the lake while going along the foot of the lake. Try to climb from such a place and enjoy this beautiful experience.
