Asakusa is divided into three areas—East, West, and South—and each neighborhood responsible for Ichinomiya will depart from the square behind the main hall. As the mikoshi is paraded in front of the shrine, a priest will purify the mikoshi and its bearers, praying for a safe procession. The sight of approximately 100 town mikoshi (portable shrines) parading through the grounds is truly impressive. -------------------------------- On Sunday the 18th, we'll be broadcasting live from the Asakusa Shrine grounds as the excitement of the bearers reaches its peak during the "Honsha Mikoshi Miyairi" (entrance ceremony for the main shrine mikoshi). There are three mikoshi: Ichinomiya, Ninomiya, and Sannomiya. After parading through each direction, they enter Asakusa Shrine adorned with tall and round lanterns. Entry into the illuminated grounds is strictly controlled, and the sight of the main shrine mikoshi being carried to the sound of ohayashi music is truly mystical. Seiko Ito will be appearing as a guest again this year on the live broadcast.
