Green hydrogen is one of the most frequently mentioned terms when discussing energy transition and decarbonization. Politics, industry, and the media often describe it as one of the key solutions for abandoning fossil fuels. But how central is it to the planet's energy future? And above all: are we really ready to use it on a large scale? In the twenty-fifth episode of Grande Giove, recorded live at the Wired Next Fest Trentino 2025, we try to understand this with two researchers who work on this technology every day: Ruggero Bellini, a biotechnologist at the Italian Institute of Technology who studies hydrogen production from organic waste, and Luca Fiori, a chemical engineer at the University of Trento specializing in thermochemical processes and energy systems. During the conversation, we discover why hydrogen is not an energy source but a carrier, the differences between green, gray, and blue hydrogen, and why producing it sustainably is a much more complex challenge than it seems. We talk about renewable energy storage, the technical challenges of the lightest molecule in the universe, and potential applications in the most difficult-to-decarbonize industrial sectors.
