Habemus Papam: Marche Pontificale (Vatican Anthem) | Charles Gounod (1818-1893)

I recorded this majestic piece an hour after the election of Pope Leo XIV after seeing so many enthusiastic and happy people on St. Peters Square. It's a sight reading recording, I did not see this piece ever before. Marche Pontificale by Charles Gounod — a majestic and solemn work that many will recognize as the official anthem of the Vatican City State. Gounod composed it in 1869 for Pope Pius IX, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his ordination as a priest. It was only later, in 1949, that it was officially adopted as the Vatican’s national anthem, replacing the earlier Marche Romaine by Vittorio Monti. You can clearly hear Gounod’s theatrical and sacred sides blending in this music — it has both the processional character of a liturgical piece and the flair of a French Romantic composer who knew how to write for drama and dignity.
