From age three Salih was fascinated by the hypnotically soft drone of the tambour as played by local musicians. Tambour is the ancient Nubian 5-string lyre traditional to Northern Sudan, and Salih began to learn to play and sing local songs. As he grew up, he learned to play oud, bass and mandolin, playing and singing traditional music. After becoming a fixture on the music scene of Port Sudan, Salih moved to Khartoum, where he studied at Khartoum Music Academy. From 1999 Salih lived and played in Holland, where he won 1st prize in the Groote Brijs Van Nederland singer/songwriter competition, and participated in the Mondial, Rasism Beed, and Melk Weg festivals. His outstanding debut album Songs from the Village was released during this period. From Holland he moved to Cairo, and is now settled in Birmingham UK. Hassan Salih Nour performs both solo with his oud & tambour, and in a number of collaborations, putting his strong vocals and expressive instrumental work into the melting pot with acclaimed world music collective Rafiki Jazz, and recently as a duo with the eclectic ace percussionist Joelle Barker. Salih is always keen to collaborate with other musicians and brilliantly takes his traditional styles into a wide range of performance settings.
