Colombian Alcatraz | Surviving Colombia's Hardest Prison (1966)

In 1966 ITN travelled to the island of Gorgona, a notorious maximum-security penal colony located 50km off Colombia's Pacific coast. Known as the "Alcatraz of Colombia," it operated from 1960 until 1984, holding Colombia's most violent criminals and political prisoners, including Eduardo Muneton Tamayo ("The Colombian Papillon") and Daniel Camargo Barbosa ("The Sadist of El Charquito"). It's estimated that more than 150 inmates would die in Gorgona, with only 3-6 successful escapes from the island, surrounded by shark and venemous snake infested waters.
