No One Believed These James Braddock Stories! Until They Watched This!

No One Believed These James Braddock Stories! Until They Watched This! He was on government relief, earning $24 a month. Ten months later, he was the heavyweight champion of the world. James J. Braddock was a washed-up dock worker from Hell's Kitchen with a shattered right hand, a losing record, and a family surviving on bread and potatoes during the Great Depression. The oddsmakers made him a 10-to-1 underdog. The sportswriters called it a mismatch. On June 13th, 1935, he walked into Madison Square Garden Bowl and took the heavyweight title from Max Baer in one of the greatest upsets in boxing history. Before the comeback, Braddock had been the number one light heavyweight contender in the world at just 23 years old. A broken hand and the stock market crash of 1929 destroyed everything. He lost 16 of 26 fights, worked the docks of Weehawken and Hoboken for $4 a day, and stood in the relief line with millions of other Americans. Then his manager Joe Gould talked his way into one last chance on a fight card undercard — and Braddock knocked out Corn Griffin on a stomach full of hash. This is the story of the Cinderella Man — from Hell's Kitchen to championship glory to the breadlines and back again. The man who repaid every cent of his government relief, enlisted in World War II, helped build the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, and was greeted as "Champ" by Joe Louis for the rest of his life.
