But for the ritual operator, power begins when he recognizes who sits beside him. In Episode 3 of the series MAGI: Between the Temple and the Crossroads, I dismantle the myth of the magician as sovereign will: the one who knows formulas and compels forces to obey. Ancient documents reveal something more unstable: the operator invokes and commands, but also offers, hosts, listens, and learns. His power is not individual possession; it is relationship. In the Greek Magical Papyri, one of the words for this presence is páredros (the one who sits beside). It is not the name of a spiritual species: it can be a god, a daimon (which does not mean the Christian devil), an angel, a shadow, or a potentiated object. What unites them is not substance, but function: to be beside the operator and act with him. Authority comes to derive not only from what he knows, but from who responds when he calls. And what is this relationship: pact or coercion? The texts do not give a single answer: there are orders and adjurations, but also offerings, oaths, and hospitality. The Spell of Pnouthis culminates in an image: having a god as a friend. But it is a hierarchical philia, sustained by duties: the pact does not exist only when it is signed; it exists as long as it is maintained. It is here that Quimbanda becomes comparable, and the comparison, dangerous. Exu is not a Greco-Egyptian paredros, nor an ancient daimon transported to Brazil, nor the Christian devil. The homology lies in the function: the tutelary Exu establishes an individualized and lasting mediation: it protects, guides, expands agency, recognized by divination, stabilized by initiation, anchored in a foundation and maintained by obligation, chant, offering, and secrecy. Exu is not an invisible employee of a sovereign will: it is the very relational foundation through which the operator learns to act. Comparing is not identifying. Power ceases to be solitude.
