Originally, the area was a small village called Layawan, which means "a place where wild animals live." It was a quiet and peaceful place with many rivers and forests. In 1880, the village became a town and was renamed Oroquieta, in honor of General Oroquieta, a hero in the Spanish-Filipino war. During World War II, Oroquieta played an important role. It became a temporary capital of the Free Philippines government when other parts of the country were occupied by the Japanese. This shows the city's resilience and importance in history. After the war, Oroquieta continued to grow. It became a city on June 25, 1969. Today, it's known for its friendly people, beautiful natural surroundings, and a laid-back lifestyle.
