Halleluyah and Hevel, Hope and Humility | 1 Pet 1:1-9 | Phil 2:5-11 | Ecclesiastes | Jacob Cherian
Halleluyah and Hevel, Hope and Humility | 1 Pet 1:1-9 | Phil 2:5-11 | Ecclesiastes | Jacob Cherian | City Harvest AG Church Halleluyah and Hevel, Hope and Humility — drawing from Psalm 146, Ecclesiastes, 1 Peter 1:1–9, and Philippians 2:5–11. Discover how HalleluYah — a call to worship and victory — meets Hevel — the mystery and brevity of life — and how together they point us to a living hope through Christ’s resurrection and the humility of Jesus, the Servant King. Learn what it means to • Praise God in every circumstance • Embrace life’s mysteries (“hevel”) as God’s gift • Live with resurrection hope and eternal joy • Walk in the humility of Christ, who poured out His life in love This message will encourage you to fear God, keep His commandments, and live with hope, joy, and humility even in life’s enigmas. Sermon Outline : HALLELUYAH AND HEVEL, HOPE AND HUMILITY PSALM 146:1-2, 10 - ECCL. 1:1-2 - 1 PETER 1:1-9 - PHIL. 2:5-11 DR. JACOB CHERIAN Hallelu-Yah – x 24 in the Psalms – as in the last 5 Hallel psalms Hallelu Yah = Command - You all, praise Yah[weh] NT – Rev. 19:1, 3, 4, 6 - Alleluia (Allēlouia) A liturgical shout of victory – a call to worship, not just a statement of praise – deeply rooted in Jewish temple worship and later synagogue liturgy. Hevel - הבל - x 70+ in the OT Ecclesiastes (x 38) - a perplexing book “One of the most relevant books in the Bible” (John Walton) Hevel = smoke (MSG), vapor, mist, breath (not meaningless or maya) A metaphor for life being an enigma, futile, mystifying, confusing, unclear; and also vulnerable, temporary, dependent, random. Accept hevel - and enjoy life as a “gift of God” (5:18-20) The author: Fear God, keep the commandments, live in light of God’s judgment. Hope – 1 Peter 1:3 – a living hope through Christ’s resurrection Our hope: resurrection - a new heaven and new earth (2 Peter 3:13; Rev. 21:1, 4) An imperishable future – and glorious joy. Story of “impudent” Peter - [Intensive Care - Mary-Lou Weisman]. Humility - humus (Latin) – earth. Accept hevel - and follow Jesus, the Servant King. Phil. 2 – Poured out His life in humble service – saw the joy beyond the cross (Heb. 12:2). The Macedonian secret – 2 Cor. 8:2 – Joy - sacrificial generosity.
