Transnistria is a region in eastern Moldova, with its capital in Tiraspol, where Russian troops are stationed. While not entirely autonomous under Moldovan law, it enjoys some autonomy, but it is de facto a separatist republic. It is not recognized by anyone – not even Russia. It encompasses the areas on the left bank of the Dniester River and the right-bank city of Bendery (Tighina). On September 2, 1990, Transnistria declared its independence as the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (Pridnestrovskaya Moldavskaya Respublika – PMR), with its capital in Tiraspol. The region's sovereignty is not internationally recognized outside the separatist republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Bendery is located on the right bank of the Dniester River near an ancient crossing point, which has always been a strategic and troubled location. The first written mention dates back to 1408. In 1538, the Moldavian principality was conquered by the Turks, who organized the construction of a fortress and renamed the city Bendery. In 1812, the city became part of the Russian Empire. Regular buildings appeared outside the fortress, and industry began to develop; in 1870, the railway passed through Bendery. In 1918, Romania conquered Bessarabia, which restored Bendery's old, almost pre-Turkish name, Tigina, which is still used in Moldova, albeit unofficially. From 1940 (with a break during World War II), the city was part of the USSR and once again bore the name Bendery. In early 1992, the authorities of Moldova and Transnistria attempted to resolve the issue of Bendery's affiliation by force. The bloodshed could only be stopped with the help of Russian troops, which, incidentally, are still stationed in Bendery. Now the city is completely peaceful and even partially demilitarized: the military has abandoned the Bendery fortress, leaving it to tourists. The border with Moldova lies within the city, but even this is practically unnoticeable. The center of Bendery is the best-preserved old Bessarabian town, distinct from the historic part of Chișinău. The Bendery fortress (now in Transnistria) was built by the Ottoman Empire in 1541 at the initiative of the architect Sinan to protect the city from the Tatars. In the following centuries, it was expanded and repeatedly participated in the Russo-Turkish wars. In 1709, King Charles XII of Sweden took refuge there after his defeat at Poltava. The fortress was captured by the Russians in 1770 and 1792, but was returned to Turkey under peace treaties. It was not until 1812 that it was incorporated into the Russian Empire and later partially rebuilt. In the 20th century, the fortress came under Romanian control (1918–1940, 1941–1944) and then under the Soviet Union (from 1944). During the Transnistrian War in 1992, it was attacked by Moldovan troops but was not captured. At the beginning of the 21st century, it was in poor condition, but renovation began in 2008.
