How to improve your horse's rhythm and tempo with Kirstin Kelly Equestrian

If you have ever wondered what Rhythm and Tempo are in Dressage. Rhythm is the regularity of hoofbeats, and Tempo is the speed of the rhythm. If you want to improve your horse's rhythm and tempo, focus on balancing the horse with your body rather than your hands. This video helps riders create a rhythmical pace with the focus on bracing the obliques, and holding the energy in your center rather than holding the horse up with your reins, which is one of the fundamentals of Dressage and flat work for jumpers, too. This video teaches riders how to control the horse's rhythm and tempo with their core and back, and how training the horse to carry itself and be in self carriage can make the difference between a wooden, heavy-mouthed horse that keeps racing forward or dropping behind the leg and a horse that is light, soft, and fun to ride. For a horse or rider that struggles to keep a consistent rhythm, often singing a song or counting the beat out loud can create harmony. The horse will often listen to the rider's voice and try to maintain the same beat. This is why Dressage to music is so rewarding, as you often see the horse trying to keep the same beat as the music. Once you can ride the pace bigger, then experimenting with changing the tempo , making it shorter and quicker, or bigger and longer is a great way to control the horse's engine and speed.
