Navigating by chart and compass to Lee on Solent...
I have been flying for ten years on an NPPL (and LAPL for a while!) but now I want to upgrade to a full UK PPL. One of the things I will need to do is a Qualifying Cross-Country (QXC) - a minimum 150 mile trip with two full-stop landings at remote airfields. I decided to brush-up my traditional navigation skills beforehand. So one fine Saturday in May 2026 I set off to Lee-on-Solent in my RV8 with my chum Ian in the back, navigating by chart, compass and stopwatch. To be honest it wasn't a huge challenge: I know the landscape pretty well. But it was instructive and good practice nonetheless, and something we should all perhaps practice occasionally, so that we have something to fall back on in the event that GPS or our marvellous modern nav aids stop working...
