Record player conversion from 3V crystal cartridge to .5V ceramic cartridge (amp modification)

From the 1940's until the early 1970's, during the era of the tube record player, it was common for cheaper units to use a single stage amplifier (using only an audio output tube and no driver tube), being driven by a 3V crystal cartridge. The reason they did it that way was because 3V crystal cartridges were plentiful and cheap. Also, the circuit design for a single stage amp only required a small amount of parts and was cheap to build. Unfortunately, the old crystal cartridges don't age well and it's rare to find a good one today. Also, no one makes a modern-day replacement for a 3V crystal cartridges and even NOS cartridges are often dead. You can use a modern .5V cartridge; but, the volume level will be low and the tonal quality will be lacking. In this video, I'll show you how to add an extra preamp tube that will allow the use of a modern cartridge and with this modification, the amp will have plenty of volume. I doubt that anyone will ever make a 3V cartridge again and what few good NOS cartridges that are left will soon be gone; so, if these old record players are to live again, it will be necessary to modify them for use with more modern cartridges.
