We are in Tunisia to explore two of the major architectural monuments, the Great Mosque of Kairouan and the Roman Ruins of Sbeitla. Our first stop is Kairouan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and important pilgrimage destination. In fact, it is the 4th most holy destination in the Muslim faith for its architectural masterpiece, the Great Mosque of Kairouan which dates back to 670 AD, making it one of the oldest mosques. The walled medina is also famous for being the filming location of the 1981 film Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark. Next, we visit a carpet shop where we explore the Berber and Tunisian carpets, a hand-made traditional craft in Tunisia. Sbeitla (aka Sufetula and in Arabic سبيطلة‎ ) is a city in north-central Tunisia where we find the best-preserved Roman forum temples in Northern Africa. It was the entry point of the Muslim conquest of North Africa. The archeological site is massive and we explore the forum, baths, and theater.
