“Se mai tornassi” is a quiet, cinematic reflection on return, absence, and the fragile hope that lingers when someone or something has slipped out of view. A piece that breathes slowly, waiting in the space between longing and acceptance. It is composed on a Yamaha Genos and enhanced with AI technology. I was inspired by Ennio Morricone’s music for the 1971 film Maddalena, a lesser‑known but deeply emotional work in his catalogue. Morricone’s score for this film is built around a sense of spiritual longing, sensuality, and inner conflict — themes that he expressed through slow‑moving strings, haunting melodies, and the iconic track Chi Mai. Maddalena is an Italian drama directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz. The story follows a woman torn between her spiritual identity and her personal desires, moving through a world of emotional tension and introspection. Morricone’s score plays a central role in shaping the film’s tone: it doesn’t simply accompany the story, it reveals it — giving voice to the inner world of the characters. The film is remembered today largely because of Morricone’s music, which has outlived the movie itself and become a standalone classic.
