Basic Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) Metrics for the Experimenter (066a2)
In this video, I walk through some of the basic specifications you will find on the datasheet for a Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT). There are a LOT more on the datasheet than I will cover here, but this will certainly get you started with the most important ones. Along with this, I give some advice as to proper device selection for your application. Lastly, I provide a quick Go - No Go test for your BJT. This test does NOT check to see if the transistor is operating according to datasheet specifications. It is intended to check to see if the transistor is obviously either partially or totally dead or if we might have some expectations that it might be OK. I am assuming in the video that you have an understanding of what is happening at a PN junction. If you do not, I strongly recommend that you take in the video in this series on "Introducing the PN Junction Diode." The link is below. Also helpful is the video where I introduce you to the BJT, explaining how it works. That link is also below. Links to all of the videos in this series are below the time markers. ======================================= Time Markers for Your Convenience ---------------------------- 00:05 Introductory Comments 01:23 Current Gain 01:39 Common Emitter & Common Collector Current Gain 07:29 Common Base Current Gain 08:50 "Turn-On" Voltage 10:12 Saturation Mode 11:42 Power Dissipation 13:09 Maximum Continuous Collector Current 15:06 Voltage Limitations 17:19 Your Basic Go-No Go Test 19:30 Final Comments and Toodle-Oots ----------------------------- ==== This video Series ==== Video#1: Introduction to the Junction Diode (How PN junctions work) • Introducing PN Junction Diodes (066a0) Video#2: Introduction to the Bipolar Junction Transistor (BJT) • Introducing Bipolar Junction Transistors (...
