La Famiglia Ipercritica

THE HYPERCRITICAL FAMILY This type of family uses criticism as a means of education and interpersonal relationship management. Through criticism, concern is demonstrated for family members, their actions, and the results they achieve in their activities. Criticism, like anger, is often linked to a hierarchical dynamic in relationships, in which some figures dominate others, exercising relational power through the systematic use of reprimands. Criticism can be anxious, driven by concern for the difficulties a family member may encounter in their life experiences; it can be devaluing, even leading to humiliation; or it can be guilt-inducing, based on the more or less explicit induction of a sense of guilt or inadequacy for having caused the distress one or more family members are experiencing. As with anger, hypercritical behavior is governed by projective mechanisms. It therefore serves to transform performance anxiety, fear of judgment, shame toward others, or other negative emotions into an active response that allows one to take control and assume a position of power within family dynamics.
