Michael Williams was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Williams, who is openly, moved to San Francisco at the age of 21. Two years later, he was in a bar in the Castro when a man dressed as a nun walked in. It was then that he was introduced to the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and soon after, Sister Roma was born. The Sisters started in 1979 when a group of gay men put on nun outfits for Easter Sunday and paraded through the Castro. What started out as street performance quickly grew into political activism.
