X-Men 97 continues the classic 90s animated series about mutants, which became popular in Brazil after airing on Globo and Fox Kids on cable TV. The production picks up right after the events of the last episode of the original animation, where Professor Xavier leaves Earth, with the X-Men believing he has died, and Magneto committing to guiding the mutants. The first season featured the apparent death of Gambit, defeating the Sentinel in Genosha in an episode that impacted the internet, and ended with Wolverine in critical condition after a confrontation with Magneto. In the end, however, it was suggested that Gambit would be returning as one of the Horsemen of Apocalypse, the iconic X-Men villain and first mutant in the Marvel universe. In the second season, the plot is divided into three timelines. Cyclops and Jean Grey were sent to 3960 AD at the end of the first season, with Wolverine, Storm, and Morph in the distant future. Professor X, Magneto, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler are in Ancient Egypt, in 3000 BC. Jubilee, Sunspot, and Forge remained in 1997. Bishop recruited Forge to rescue his time-traveling colleagues. In the English version, Ross Marquand will voice Apocalypse. Both the classic series and X-Men '97 are available on Disney+. The showrunner of the first season of X-Men '97, Beau DeMayo, was fired by Marvel after the series' release. According to DeMayo, a gay man who worked on OnlyFans, the dismissal came after he shared LGBT+ art involving the X-Men. Some reports, however, claim that he harassed colleagues, including showing them intimate photos of himself. DeMayo refuted these accusations, but remains distant from the series. The second season of X-Men 97 features his contributions to the story, as he had already helped with the script before being fired. The scripts, however, were revised, and the already guaranteed third season is now 100% in the hands of the new showrunner, Matthew Chauncey.
