Hopkins River breached into Southern Ocean. Blocked river drains into sea in torrent
After being blocked for several months because of the local drought, the local council used machinery to open the mouth of the Hopkins River. The initial stream quickly grew into a torrent of water as it washed away tonnes of sand. Finally, eels and fish will be able to access their breeding grounds, and the flooding upstream will ease.
