Randy Rhoads: A Tale of Two Tones

There are few bonafide ‘guitar heroes’ in this world. There are fewer who totally revolutionised the guitar industry; innovating new designs of instruments, new playing techniques and new approaches, influencing the way millions of us play and think about guitar. To top it off, there are even fewer who can be so closely associated with polka dots and white Les Paul Customs... In today’s Tale of Two Tones, Jack pays his own ‘tribute’ to one of the all-time greats, Mr Randy Rhoads. Though crushingly short-lived, Randy’s career with the first iteration of Ozzy Osbourne’s solo band in the early 80s catapulted him to instant stardom in the guitar universe, as a genuine, passionate and meticulously disciplined musician with a lot to say, and a lot of talent to back it all up. The two studio albums showed a huge progression in his playing style and guitar tones, and all was encapsulated on the amazing posthumous live album, ‘Tribute’. It is this record that Jack focuses on today, showing the true ‘rock star’ side of Randy’s sensational playing, talking through the different approaches to gear he used, including the creation of custom instruments that would inspire entire product lines, as well as what Randy’s stellar playing and no-holds-barred approach means to him. Who knows what Randy would have gone on to achieve with his monumental playing. By the age of just 25, he had already left behind an incredible legacy, arguably unmatched by any of his peers in the metal genre to this day.
