Ratan Lakda, a tuberculosis patient from the Garhwa area, had government scheme money sitting in his account at the Badgarh branch of Jharkhand Gramin Bank. For three long months — from March to June — he and his daughter-in-law kept visiting the bank to withdraw money needed for treatment and food. Every time the bank refused, citing incomplete KYC and biometric. When Ratan became too weak to even climb the stairs to the second floor, his daughter-in-law pleaded with the bank manager to send someone downstairs to take his thumb impression. Instead of helping, the manager ordered staff to throw both of them out of the bank. A social worker’s warning finally forced the bank to send employees to Ratan’s home for biometric verification. Moments after it was completed, Ratan Lakda died — still waiting for his own money. The entire village then carried his coffin to the bank gate and demanded to bury him right there so that every bank employee would have to walk over his grave every day. Later that night, senior bank officials — including Manager Krishna Kumar Ram and Nandlal — secretly visited the widow’s house, switched off the lights, and tried to silence the family. Villagers caught them on camera. The news reached Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who ordered action.
