Escursione da Base Tuono al Monte Maggio con Isotta | Tra nuvole, trincee e van life

In the morning, we set out from Base Tuono, the former missile base at Passo Coe, with the idea of retracing my very first hike with Isotta. She was a puppy then, and I had to pick her up halfway; now, at two and a half years old, she's already conquered many peaks, and I'm returning with her to Monte Maggio. From the parking lot (maximum 10 campers), we skirt the Passo Coe lake and begin climbing through the woods toward the summit. Low clouds accompany us along a steady and somewhat monotonous path, but by taking the right fork, we find a more scenic stretch. Along the way, I share interesting facts about the area, point out where to stop at the café on weekends, and record the route, which you can download below. At the summit, we find the large cross and the trenches from World War I: Monte Maggio was a strategic point on the front line. The fog struggles to lift, but when it does, the landscapes of the Folgaria plateau emerge. After a break with salted caramel hot chocolate (a real treat!), we return to the camper via an alternative trail through the woods for a bit of variety. On the way back, I'll show you Base Tuono: the old Nike-Hercules missile launch site is now an open-air museum open to guided tours. A few meters away is the botanical garden and the Zonta mountain hut, sadly infamous for a partisan massacre.
