Ep2: Interview: Tyler Staton On How To Hunger For More In Your Faith
H! And welcome to The White Flag—a place where we learn what it means to surrender to Jesus in our hurried, manic, control-obsessed world. In this video, you'll hear Tyler Staton and I discuss our personal journeys into courageous surrender, and what it takes to live in this posture over the long haul. We cover everything from how sermons can be idolatrous, how rhythmic prayer can be helpful, and why The Notebook is a terrible example of what commitment really looks like. I found myself hungering for depth and longing for Jesus more after our conversation, and I hope it helps you too! Follow me online: Website: jonathanmoynihan.com Instagram: / jonathan.moynihan About the guest: Tyler Staton is the Lead Pastor at Oaks Church Brooklyn in NYC, and is the soon-to-be Lead Pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, OR. He is passionate about building community that's unexplainable apart from the love of God. He is also the author of a new book, "Searching for Enough: The High-Wire Walk Between Doubt and Faith," available on Amazon. About The White Flag: The White Flag is a place for people who are restless in their faith, overwhelmed by the noise of culture, and seeking transformative growth in our hurried, manic, control-obsessed world. We seek to make the ancient practices of Jesus both applicable, and approachable, so that everyone can experience the abundant life Jesus promises—that regardless of trauma, pain, or heartache, we can live a life that is "free and light" because Jesus promises it. About the host: My name is Jonathan Moynihan, and I'm a teaching minister at Mosaic Christian Church just outside of Baltimore, and I'm passionate about helping people get off the endless treadmill of spiritual exhaustion so they can find rest in Jesus. Here's the thing, I'm a recovering people pleaser, I'm an Enneagram 7, and I'm an extreme extrovert, so absolutely NOTHING about me is wired to enjoy spiritual disciplines like silence, solitude, or even honoring the Sabbath. I wanna go go go 24/7. And yet, God has broke me and transformed me by adopting the ancient practices of Jesus and what I call practices of "courageous surrender." By focusing not just on the words of Jesus, but the lifestyle practice of Jesus, I've discovered what it truly means to be at peace with God in His presence. And I want to help as many people as possible experience what it means to joyfully surrender to Jesus and stop operating out of human striving, but flourishing in the Spirit. I have a beautiful (growing) family, with my wife Stephanie of 10 years, two beautiful baby girls, Evie and Isla, and a baby boy coming in July (name is TBD, I'm taking suggestions)!
