Iberian, Roman, Islamic and Christian hands all shaped it over the centuries. The climb (or the little tourist train) rewards you with breathtaking views over the old town, the orange groves and the La Costera valley. 👑 CITY OF THE BORGIAS Xàtiva is the cradle of the Borgia dynasty — and the birthplace of two popes: Callixtus III and the infamous Alexander VI. Few small towns on earth can claim a single pope, let alone two. 🖼️ THE UPSIDE-DOWN KING In the L'Almodí museum hangs a portrait of King Philip V… turned upside down. In 1707, during the War of the Spanish Succession, he burned Xàtiva to the ground and renamed it "San Felipe." The town never forgave him — and hangs his image inverted to this day. ⛪ LA SEU & THE OLD TOWN The Collegiate Basilica of Santa María (La Seu) crowns the historic centre, a blend of Gothic and Renaissance. Around it wind medieval streets, noble mansions and the elegant façade of the Hospital Reial. Xàtiva was also the birthplace of the great Golden Age painter José de Ribera. ⛲ THE TOWN OF A THOUSAND FOUNTAINS Xàtiva is famous for its fountains — around 750 of them.
