Brutto per chi? Le Lavatrici - con Antonio Lavarello 13/02/2024

Series of Lectures: Architecture to Reconsider The Pegli 3 social housing complex (now the San Pietro district), nicknamed Le Lavatrici, designed by Aldo Luigi Rizzo in collaboration with Andrea Mor and Angelo Sibilla, has been the subject of negative criticism from large segments of the public; this negative perception is often the result of a distant vision and superficial knowledge. This presentation will attempt to bring the public closer to this building by examining the collective history of the construction of Genoa's large public housing districts and the personal journey of the designer, clearing away some clichés and providing useful tools for understanding and evaluating the architectural qualities and potential of this work. Antonio Lavarello, Genoese architect, holds a PhD in architecture. He teaches, disseminates, and conducts research focusing on the history, theory, and criticism of architecture; he has written or edited dozens of scientific and popular publications on these topics. He is a visiting professor at the Department of Architecture and Design at the University of Genoa. He has spoken or been a visiting critic at various universities and cultural institutions, including the Polytechnic University of Turin, La Sapienza University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the MAXXI Museum in Rome, the Palazzo Ducale Foundation for Culture in Genoa, and the Foundation of the Order of Architects of Genoa. He is a member of the editorial board of the scientific electronic journal Archphoto. He founded the SPLACE collective, active in the field of temporary architecture and public art. He owns Studio Lavarello with his father Matteo and sister Marta.
