Starting in the 1920s, the Sunset Strip became a showcase for the elite and aspiring stars of Hollywood until the early 60’s when it lost its shine to the brighter lights of Las Vegas and its venues went dark. Just a few years later, the electrification of music resurrected the dormant clubs, revitalizing the area and shifting the center of gravity of rock n’ roll from New York to L.A., giving rise to bands like The Byrds, The Doors, and later Van Halen. Author and historian Laurie Jacobson is our guest for Part 1 and takes us from the early 1900s to 1965, and Part two of this episode features Domenic Priore, author of Riot on the Sunset Strip, who brings us through the counterculture movement of the 1960s and the clash between hair metal, punk and new wave in the early 1980s.
