What every Canadian needs to know about radon in the 21st century
About this Webinar: In Canada, 2 in 5 cases of lung cancer are not due to tobacco use, with radon exposure being the leading cause of lung cancer for people who do not use tobacco. To address this problem, the Evict Radon National Study was created to understand Canadian radon exposure from the population to the biological levels and use the data help decrease future Canadian lung cancers. This means that we are approaching the problem of radon induced lung cancer through studying long term radon levels, alongside important aspects including how Canadians are building their home, where we work, sleep and play and even how our occupations play a significant role in our lung cancer risk from radon. This presentation will touch on several topics including what we know about radon and lung cancer, the history of radon, and how radon’s radiation affects our health. Dr. Dustin Pearson will present summaries of what their study has found over the years, including how Canadians are unintentionally building homes to capture and contain radon, and how our jobs and behaviours can play a significant role in radon exposure. Finally, Dr. Pearson will end the talk with how the Evict Radon study has found a new way of measuring a person’s unique lifetime exposure to radon, using toenails. If successful, this new method holds the key to allowing people with high radon exposure access to life saving lung cancer screening programs. About the Presenter: Dr. Dustin Pearson is one of the senior scientists in the Goodarzi laboratory and is the research operations manager for the Evict Radon National Study. His work focuses on the biology of alpha particle exposure, as well as the study of the real-time indoor air dynamics of radon within the residential built environment. In this project, Dr. Pearson serves as the primary manager for all radon databases, masterminding the security, annotation and analysis of our complex datasets relating to radon exposures, participant demographics, building metrics and more. Dustin’s work is currently supported by the Canadian Cancer Society.
