English Electric Lightning F6 XS904 Engine Run with Reheat 26 July 2025 Lightning Preservation Group

Part 2 of an amazing day at the Lightning Preservation Group in Bruntingthorpe. This time is was the turn of English Electric lightning XS904 - again doing engine runs with reheat! For this run I took up a position behind the aircraft and what an assault on the senses it was. When reheat kicks in, flames shoots out of the engine, noise goes to an unbelievable level, sound waves are so intense you feel the whole atmosphere around you vibrating. A truly unbelievable experience of this aviation marvel. If you don't know anything about the English Electric Lightning, here are some interesting facts: All weather day & night interceptor 2 Rolls Royce Avon 302 engines, delivering 16,300 lbs of trust with reheat Initial rate of climb of 50000 ft per minute Brakes off to 36000 ft 2m 30 secs Brakes off to 450 knots in 45 secs Max speed at 40000 ft 1520 mph or mach 2.3 Service ceiling 60000 ft record of 88000 ft 00:00 - Towed out of the Quick Reaction(QR) hanger 01:15 - Engine 1 startup (top engine) 02:10 - Air brake test 02:25 - Flap test 02:33 - Flight control surface test 03:30 - Engine 1 power up and leak check 04:05 - Engine 1 Reheat run 1 - CHECK OUT THE FLAME! 04:50 - Engine 1 Reheat run 2 - ANOTHER GIANT FLAME! 06:23 - Engine Shutdown 06:55 - Engine 2 startup (bottom engine) 07:44 - Air brake test 08:00 - Flap test 08:11 - Flight control surface test 08:40 - Engine 2 power up and leak check 10:15 - Engine 2 Reheat run 1 11:42 - Air brakes deployed 12:10 - Engine shutdown I can honestly say this is a must for any aviation enthusiast. Ok, it's not like when these jets could do fast taxi runs but it is still a fantastic experience.
