The Astra arrived in Brazil in 1994, officially imported by Chevrolet from Belgium – the famous Belgian Astra – during a brief period when importing a car suddenly became cheaper than manufacturing it in Brazil, due to a reduction in import tax from 35% to 20% by then Finance Minister Ciro Gomes. Its second generation was only manufactured here in 1998 and lasted until 2011.
