How to remove the lien from your vehicle. Paid the last installment on your car and don't know what to do now? And in today's video, I'm going to explain exactly... how to remove the lien from your vehicle. Many people buy a car on finance, finish paying all the installments, and think the process is over. But the truth is, in the DMV system, your car may still be "tied" to the bank. The lien is a notation in the system that indicates that the vehicle is collateral for a loan. While the lien exists, you cannot transfer the car to another person or legally sell the vehicle. There are three main types of restrictions that generate a lien. The most common type is Fiduciary Alienation, which is traditional bank financing. We also have Commercial Leasing, known as Leasing. And Reservation of Ownership, which is when the deal is made directly between seller and buyer, without a bank involved. But how do you remove this from the document? The first step is to pay off all installments of your contract. After you pay the last installment, the finance company is obligated to inform the National Lien System of the payment. This communication between the bank and the system is electronic and is usually quick. When the bank notifies that everything is paid, the lien is removed. But pay attention here, driver: the removal in the system does not automatically change your printed or digital document. If you look at the observations field of your document now, it will say "fiduciary alienation". Even after paying everything, this phrase remains there until you issue a new document. To completely clear the document, you need to request the issuance of a new CRV (Vehicle Registration Certificate) from the Detran (Department of Motor Vehicles). You will need to bring your personal documents, proof of residence, undergo a physical inspection (required here in Amazonas, check if it's charged in your city), and the current receipt. Only after this process will your document become what we call a "clean document," without restrictions. A very common mistake is for the driver to try to sell the car immediately after paying the last installment, without checking if the bank has already removed the lien from the system. If the bank forgets to inform the system, the transfer will be blocked at the Detran (Department of Motor Vehicles). If you only want to sell the car and the lien has already been electronically removed by the bank, you don't necessarily need to get a new document in your name before transferring it to the buyer. At the time of transfer to the new owner, the system will already identify that the debt has been paid off, and the buyer's new document will be clear. In short, once the car is paid off, the bank notifies the system, and the lien is removed.
