New Pen Day: Gravitas Vac 2.0 Aluminum Black

Dad, this one's for you. A few of you asked in the comments how a vacuum filler actually works, so today we're taking a close look at the Gravitas Vac 2.0 in Aluminum Black. I disassemble it, show you the vac filler inside, clean it, reassemble it, fill it, and write with it. You'll probably get more than you bargained for. The Vac 2.0 comes out of Gravitas Pens in Ireland (fulfilled through Pen Venture in Romania). It's an Ultem demonstrator body with anodized aluminum on the cap, finials, and knob, a black-coated steel section, and a black #6 steel nib. Mine's a Fine, and it writes like glass right out of the box. The headline feature is the filling system: a compact version of Gravitas's Kraken vacuum filler, good for 4.5ml+ of ink. That's a lot of ink, and it's why this is the pen I took on a plane this week -- a vac filler travels without the spurting you get from a converter. A few honest notes: No clip, no roll stop, hence the pen rest. It'll roll. Buying direct from the US in 2026 means tariffs and import duties on top of the euro price and DHL shipping. It adds up fast. Watch for it, or wait for US retailer stock. The maintenance spanner is sold separately (~€12). I didn't buy it. Needle-nose pliers and a paper towel got the job done. Probably voids the warranty. So be it. Gravitas recommends cleaning regularly, not letting ink sit, and avoiding red inks. I went with a blue. You may remember my Gravitas Monster on the channel... the one that snapped in half where the acrylic meets the aluminum. I'm hoping the Vac 2.0's Ultem-to-aluminum construction holds up better over the long run. Jury's still out, but early signs are good.
