A Hotel-Inspired Sanctuary with Decal Headboard & a Trash-Find Painting in a Charleston Cottage

Artist and Mirth Studio founder Sally Bennett shares her peaceful primary bedroom inside her 1950s cottage on John's Island, Charleston — a room designed to feel like a quiet hotel sanctuary amid the constant creativity of the rest of the house. With Mirth Studio wallpaper running to the ceiling with custom printed trim instead of crown molding, a plain bed frame transformed with hand-painted vinyl decals so convincing guests assume it is an antique, a painting found in a literal pile of roadside trash now given pride of place, a faux tortoiseshell table painted from a plain blue piece, and a tender gallery wall that doubles as a shrine to her late father — this bedroom is proof that the most personal rooms are made of stories, not budgets.
