The Village Left Abandoned By World War 2 - Tyneham
Tyneham is an incredibly sad yet beautiful village situated next to the coast in Dorset, England. A settlement existed on the site for centuries, and occupation in the area even dates back to the Roman times. The villagers in Tyneham lived a simple life, they had no electricity and little running water but they were happy. Nearby is Worbarrow Bay, where a small fishing colony was based. Life seemed extremely quiet and happy for the over 200 people that lived there, until 1943 and the Second World War turned in its tide. In late 1943, the villagers of Tyneham were sent a letter. This letter would shape their lives forever, as they were told by the Ministry of Defence and the British Army to leave their homes and their way of live within 28 days. The British Government and Winston Churchill had ordered their village and the land around to be used in preparation for D-Day, as tank crews and soldiers would be trained nearby. The villagers had to leave, they had no choice. They believed however that one day they could return to their homes following the end of the conflict, but this sadly was never to be the case. Some of the villagers who have passed would return, however only to be buried in the local churchyard. The story of Tyneham is an incredible sad one, and join us today as we look at, 'The Tragic Village Left Abandoned By World War 2.' Thanks for watching!
