How the Spanish Empire Brought Cannabis to the Americas
Long before cannabis became connected to marijuana prohibition, modern culture, or medical cannabis, it crossed the Atlantic for a very different reason: hemp. In this episode of Cannabis History, we explore how the Spanish Empire helped introduce cannabis to the Western Hemisphere during the 1500s. To Spanish officials, hemp was not a rebellious or mysterious plant. It was a strategic fiber crop used for rope, sailcloth, nets, textiles, military supplies, and naval power during the Age of Sail. This documentary follows cannabis from the Old World to Spanish America, including early hemp cultivation in Chile’s Quillota Valley, New Spain, Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Veracruz, and Alta California. We also look at figures connected to early hemp cultivation in Mexico, including Hernán Cortés and Pedro Cuadrado, and explain why hemp production mattered to Spanish colonial agriculture, ships, missions, and empire. But the story does not end with rope and sails. Once cannabis entered new lands, it entered new cultures. Over time, cannabis in Mexico developed a much more complicated identity, eventually becoming associated with the word “marihuana,” marginalized communities, immigration fears, sensational journalism, and modern marijuana prohibition. From imperial hemp to modern cannabis history, this is one of the earliest chapters in the story of cannabis in the Americas. #cannabishistory #hemphistory #hempflower #historydocumentary #marihuanamedicinal #colonialhistory #cannabiseducation Video Timeline: 00:00 Introduction: Cannabis Comes to the Western Hemisphere 02:23 Chapter 1: Cannabis Before the Americas 03:45 Chapter 2: The Age of Sail and the Need for Hemp 04:59 Chapter 3: Cannabis Crosses the Atlantic 07:16 Chapter 4: New Spain and the Mexican Story 09:12 Chapter 5: When Hemp Became More Than Hemp 09:48 Chapter 6: The Late Colonial Push 11:23 Chapter 7: Independence and Decline 12:23 Chapter 8: From Imperial Hemp to Modern Cannabis History **This video is for educational purposes only.
