Dance Photography with BANDALOOP! Behind-the-Scenes
Early this year, I had the opportunity to work with @BANDALOOPING whose vertical performance artistry is unparalleled. These artists literally turn the dance floor sideways. Their "stage" can be an urban building, or a cliff face in the natural world. What they bring to us is lyrically expressed dance, choreographed with innovation and audacity. I strove to get my camera up in their space, near where they fly, and work wide angle. I used the Nikon mirrorless Z 7 camera, coupled with the beautifully sharp 14-30mm f/4 lens, to show dimension and drama. The durability and lightness of the Z was a great advantage here, working off a crane, or hanging from a wire, as the dancers, apparently effortlessly, moved through space above me and around me. It was mesmerizing. All credit to Nikon USA ( / nikonusa ) for endorsing and supporting this effort, and to BANDALOOP ( / projectbandaloop , whose boundless creativity was a pleasure to join forces with. So many people to thank for this. Lynn DelMastro produced this impeccably as always, and was matched in her excellence by BANDALOOP Exec Director Thomas Cavanagh and Artistic Director Melecio Estrella. The crew was terrific, with Rebel Sun providing the go to grip, and Samy's San Fran working out the lighting rentals. Yoram Savion ( / yoram.savion ) and James Adamson James Adamson ( / _james_adamson_ ) created wonderful BTS stills and this video, which fellow Nikon Ambassador Chris Hershman ( / chrishershman ) edited in a wonderful way. Krystal Harfert produced from the BANDALOOP side, and peerless riggers Mike Rogers, Derrick Lindsay and Jeremy Yee slung me and the dancers into space without missing a beat. Sara Estrella clad the dancers beautifully, and Dream Peeples did the makeup. And the dancers! Rose Huey ( / rosehuey ) and Jessica Swanson ( / swanstagrams ) were graceful and lovely in the air, making it look easy, belying the tremendous strength it takes to do this.
