Akku-Triebzüge Baureihe 1440 (Alstom Coradia Continental) als RE 6 Leipzig–Chemnitz

New vehicles on regional express train line RE 6 Leipzig–Chemnitz (federal state of Saxony, Germany) in passenger service – Regional express line RE 6 connects Leipzig and Chemnitz. It is operated by Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn, a company that is part of the Transdev group. In 2025 Chemnitz had been the "culture capital" of Europe. Then RE 6 was typically operated with push-pull trains consisting of 3 double deck cars and a class 223 Diesel locomotive. There were also replacement trainsets in service consisting of LINT 41 Diesel multiple units, even with inscriptions of Bayerische Regiobahn. Since February 2026 the first battery electric multiple units (BEMU), type Alstom Coradia Continental, class 1440, are running in passenger service. The original plan had been to use them already in 2025, for the culture capital year, but then they had not been approved by the authorities. The BEMUs are 3-sectional units. They are very much alike with the Coradia Continental electric multiple units used by Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn between Dresden, Chemnitz and Hof. The important difference is formed by the rechargable batteries plus the additional electronics. The sound during charging is less prominent here than the charging sound produced by Stadler FLIRT BEMUs used in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Should the railway line Leipzig–Chemnitz get overhead wires in the future, the batteries would become obsolete and could be removed. Due to damage coused by vandalism, the section of the line between Leipzig central station and Leipzig-Liebertwolkwitz could not be used from February 7 to 11. Some of the trains ended at Liebertwolkwitz, others were diverted via Borna, Neukieritzsch and the so-called Waldbahn.
