The secret to brilliant one stroke painting is loading your brush so the colours stay clean and vibrant, and don’t muddy together. Moisten your paint - lightly spritz the split cake with water until the surface looks slightly glossy. Too much water will make colours run. Wet the brush tip and remove excess water - dip just the tip of your brush in water, then wipe it off on the edge of your water cup or a towel. This keeps your brush slightly damp - ideal for loading colour. Swipe the brush across the split cake - back and forth a few times so each colour stripe loads onto the brush bristles. The goal is to pick up all the colours at once so when you paint, you get shading automatically. Check your load - your brush should have rich colour all the way up into the bristles. If it’s too light, load more. If colours look muddy on the palette, adjust your loading technique.
