Othala - Eksitaja
In ancient times, when the forests of Estonia were wild and full of secrets, when the marshes steamed with mist, and the paths vanished beneath a carpet of moss, there dwelled in those lands an evil spirit named Eksitaja. No human eyes had seen him, and none knew his true form. They said he could be anyone – an old stump by the roadside, a hare darting through the thicket, a quiet voice whispering a traveler’s name, or a faint light flickering over the shifting bog. But most often, he was invisible, like fear itself, gripping the heart when one realizes: they are lost. Yet Eksitaja did not always appear as a shadow or the rustle of branches high in the trees. The old storytellers claimed he could take the shape of a beautiful maiden – so fair that a traveler's heart would freeze the moment he laid eyes on her. "Follow me," her lips would whisper, and the man would go, unknowing that behind such beauty lay doom. The maiden-Eksitaja did not hurry; she would glance back, beckoning softly. The paths seemed gentle, and the forest – light. But the further the traveler walked, the denser grew the thickets, the colder became the air. And then – the maiden was gone, the path was gone, and darkness pressed in from every side. And in the heart – only emptiness, while her laughter echoed in the distance, like the wind between the pines. Eksitaja did not welcome strangers in his forest. He guarded the trails hidden beneath the branches of ancient firs and waited. It took but one wrong step, one stray thought, one moment of hesitation – and Eksitaja was already near. One glance at the maiden standing at the edge of the clearing, and the traveler was his. The trails would twist and turn, the trees all looked the same, and each step led deeper, ever deeper into the forest’s heart. People would walk and walk, and suddenly they would notice: the same tree again, the same stone. Round and round, Eksitaja led his victims. The heart pounded with dread, legs weakened, thoughts tangled. At times, the traveler would hear a hoarse chuckle behind them, a soft breath, as if someone was near – but no one was there. Only forest. Only moss and silence. And sometimes Eksitaja lured with light – dim, trembling, like a firefly among the trees. And the traveler, hoping for salvation, would follow, but the light led ever further, to where the marshes began, and the ground turned soft, shifting, treacherous. The old folk said Eksitaja never killed with his own hands. He waited until the traveler gave up – from fear, from exhaustion, from cold. And then he would take their soul and carry it into the depths of the forest, where there was no more time, no more light. But the people knew tricks against the evil spirit. Whoever wandered into the woods had to remember: if you’ve lost your way – sit down, do not walk, wait until your heart calms, until your mind clears. And if you turn your shirt inside out, if you switch your shoes from one foot to the other, Eksitaja would become confused, fail to recognize you, and let you go. Some would carry a piece of bread in their pocket – an offering for the spirits, so they wouldn’t touch them. And the brave ones might even shout aloud: "Eksitaja, be gone! I must go home!" – and if the spirit grew tired of his game, he would release the traveler. They say Eksitaja still wanders among the trees, whispering with the wind, calling to the weak. And sometimes at dusk, you might see a slender maiden at the forest’s edge, dressed in white, like morning mist. But if you follow her – know that you will not find your way back soon. The forest is kind to those who know its laws. But forget even one of them – and you’ll hear footsteps behind you, though no one is there.
