The Wall Street Journal revealed in an exclusive report that María Corina Machado's failed attempt to return to Venezuela did not have the support of the United States government. The democratic leader had boarded a private jet that took off from Virginia bound for Curaçao, from where she planned to enter Venezuelan territory. According to the American newspaper, approximately an hour after takeoff, while the aircraft was flying over North Carolina, the private company operating the flight ordered the pilot to return to the Washington area. The flight, which had cost around $35,000, was canceled without a clear initial explanation, as the flight plans and landing rights had been previously authorized. The Wall Street Journal also revealed that President Donald Trump held a phone call with Delcy Rodríguez last Friday, following the earthquake that struck Venezuela. During the conversation, Trump directly asked the regime's vice president "not to take action against María Corina Machado or interfere with her return to Venezuela." US officials came to believe that Machado was planning to return to Venezuela by boat from Curaçao, following the same dangerous route she used to escape her country on December 9, when she left to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in Norway. Although she had been asked to be patient in order to make her return without jeopardizing her safety, the opposition leader tried to move forward with her plans.
