Chukat–Balak: The Rock, the Water, and the Source of Life

A teaching on the double portion Chukat-Balak, focused on the aliyah from Bamidbar / Numbers 20:7–21 — the difficult moment when Moshe is commanded to speak to the rock, but strikes it instead. Why was the command different this time? In Shemot 17, Moshe was told to strike the rock; here he is told to speak to it. That difference opens up some of the deepest questions in the parashah: The ancient Jewish tradition of the rock that followed Israel in the wilderness — a tradition already known in the first century, even reflected in the writings of Rav Shaul (1 Corinthians 10:4) Why the Torah refuses to present even Moshe and David as flawless — holiness as learning how Hashem works through human weakness, not pretending humans are perfect Israel's peaceful request to pass through Edom, the refusal that met it, and the strength of knowing when not to fight The rock as the source of life: water coming from a place where life shouldn't be found, and what that means for any religious community The two opposite dangers — lawlessness on one side, and empty, lifeless observance on the other — and why kavanah, intention, and love must accompany obedience The bronze serpent and King Hezekiah: how something Hashem gives for healing can be turned into an idol when people forget its purpose. The object was never the source — Hashem was the source. "Unless Hashem builds the house, those who build it labor in vain." Be like the Bereans: read the Scriptures, search them for yourselves, and test everything by Torah with humility. May our Torah observance never become dry, may our faith never become arrogant, and may our hearts remain open to the living water that Hashem provides.
